Dynamics Business Central FAQs

Business Central is a cloud-based business solution that is part of Dynamics 365. it is an agile and flexible solution that is easy to use and customize for your business to grow exponentially without worrying about synchronizing various processes. Dynamics 365 Business Central gives you everything you need to run your business with tools to help you make informed decisions.

Being an all-in-one business application, Business Central contains an array of functionality that brings together several business areas in one unified system. Its solutions are customized via Extensions which you can download on the AppStore without spending on expensive customizations.

Dynamics NAV was the name used for the solution until 2018 - when Microsoft rebranded Dynamics NAV and gave it the name Business Central. The latest version of Dynamics NAV was NAV 2018. Although it was mainly a rebranding and name change, there is no doubt that Microsoft also wanted to mark that the solution would soon be a cloud solution sold exclusively on subscription.

Most US companies start with Business Central Essentials ($80 per user/month). It covers finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, warehousing, projects and reporting.

Business Central Premium ($110 per user/month) adds manufacturing (production orders, capacity and supply planning) and service management (service orders, service contracts and technician scheduling). Premium features are switched on per company, and users with an Essentials license can't sign in to a company set up for Premium, so manufacturers usually license all full users as Premium.

People who only view data, approve requests or make light updates can use Team Members licenses ($8 per user/month). Not sure which you need? Ask us and we'll map your users to the right licenses.

Licenses are only part of the cost. Plan for:

  • Implementation: setup, data migration, training and go-live support. Use the calculator above for an estimate, or ask us for a fixed quote.
  • Apps and integrations: some apps from Microsoft AppSource (for example sales tax or EDI apps) have their own monthly fees.
  • Extra storage or environments: each subscription includes database storage, one production environment and three sandboxes; more can be added if you need them.
  • Support after go-live: optional help desk, updates and improvements.

Microsoft bills Business Central licenses per user per month, with a yearly commitment.
