If your company runs Microsoft Dynamics GP, the clock is running. Microsoft has confirmed that Dynamics GP support ends on December 31, 2029. GP won’t stop working that day, but the tax updates, fixes and technical support that US companies rely on stop with it. Akkomplish is a US-based Business Central partner headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. Here are the dates that matter, what changes, and how to plan your next step.
The key Dynamics GP dates
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| April 1, 2026 | Last day for new customers to license Dynamics GP subscriptions. |
| July 14, 2026 | Support ended for Dynamics GP 2016 and GP 2016 R2. |
| January 11, 2028 | Support ends for Dynamics GP 2018 and GP 2018 R2 on the fixed lifecycle. (Installing a current GP update moves you to version 18.5 or later, which follows the modern lifecycle below.) |
| December 31, 2029 | End of product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates and technical support for Dynamics GP. |
| April 30, 2031 | Last security updates. Subscription licensing, including use through hosting providers (SPLA), is expected to end, and no more perpetual users can be added. |

What end of support means for a US company on GP
- No more tax updates after 2029. Microsoft’s regulatory (tax) updates end, so there will be no GP year-end updates for payroll and 1099 forms after that.
- No technical support from Microsoft. If something breaks, you depend on whichever partners and add-on vendors still support GP.
- Security patches only until April 30, 2031. After that, your financial data sits in software that no longer gets security fixes, which auditors will ask about.
- Fewer GP experts every year. As partners and add-on vendors move to newer products, GP help gets slower and more expensive.
Your three options
1. Stay on GP for now, with a plan
GP is still supported, so there is no need to panic. But a move takes preparation, and the best go-live dates (the start of a fiscal year) are limited. Use the time to plan rather than wait.
2. Move to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
This is the path Microsoft recommends for GP customers. Microsoft provides a cloud migration tool for GP that brings over your setup, chart of accounts (the account segments become dimensions for reporting), customers, vendors, items, open transactions and vendor 1099 information. If you choose, it also brings GP history (general ledger detail, receivables, payables, sales, purchasing and inventory transactions), which you can still look up in Business Central. GP stays in use until you switch. See our Dynamics GP to Business Central migration page.
3. Choose a different ERP
Some GP customers also look at Oracle NetSuite or Sage Intacct. Compare them fairly: see Business Central vs NetSuite and Business Central vs Sage Intacct.
How to plan a move from GP
- List what you use in GP today: modules, add-ons, customizations, reports, integrations and payroll.
- Find the Business Central equivalent for each: a standard feature, an app from Microsoft AppSource, or a small extension.
- Plan payroll separately. Business Central has no built-in US payroll, so most companies connect a payroll service or an AppSource app.
- Decide how much history to bring (for example, summary balances for five years and detail for two) and what to keep in a read-only GP archive.
- Clean your data: inactive customers, vendors and items, and old open items.
- Run a test migration, check the balances with your accountant, then pick the go-live date.
- Train your team and go live, ideally at the start of a fiscal year or quarter.
When should you start?
Most companies prefer to switch at the start of a fiscal year, so for a calendar-year company the remaining go-live dates before support ends are January 2027, 2028 or 2029. Each needs several months of preparation before it. Partner availability usually tightens as a deadline gets closer, so starting early gives you more choice and less risk.
Frequently asked questions
Will Dynamics GP stop working on January 1, 2030?
No. The software keeps running. What stops is support, enhancements and tax updates. Security updates continue until April 30, 2031.
Can we still buy Dynamics GP?
New customers could license GP subscriptions only until April 1, 2026. Existing customers can keep using their licenses; ask your partner before adding users.
Do we lose our GP history if we move?
No. Microsoft’s migration tool can bring GP history into Business Central, and you choose how many years. Many companies also keep GP as a read-only archive.
Does Business Central have US payroll?
Not built in. Most US companies connect a payroll service or an app from Microsoft AppSource. We help you choose and connect it.
